Glider Event 04-07-2024
Hey all,
Check out these photos from April's glider event at Homestead Executive Airport. The overall turnout was 9 cadets, five from our squadron, and four from Tamiami composite. They each had a chance to control the aircraft at a certain altitude, of course, with the guidance of our Certified Flight Instructor, Mr. Jan Kratochvil. He has the credentials to train, teach, and provide flight hours for student pilots.
For a lot of the cadets, this was their first time flying in a glider. Mind you, this glider is motorless, and relies on the tow plane to achieve altitude. While ascending the glider pilot has to match or try to predict the movements of the tow plane, and then copy the movements with their aileron, and wing controls. They have rudders and stick much like a standard engine aircraft. There is a rope that connects the tow plane and the glider, and at a certain altitude (for my flight it was 1,000 feet) the glider pilot in command releases the rope, and essentially goes down to a controlled descent, and lands on the grass field. As I've mentioned before, if you know anyone interested in aviation, Civil Air Patrol gives cadets 5 free glider flights, and 5 free powered aircraft flights (usually in the Cessna 172).
