Radio Comm Practice and Pilot License Prep 09-14-2024
September 14, 2024
Opa-Locka Squadron Cadets conducted radio communications training pertinent to aviation. In this meeting, they evaluated the proper techniques acceptable to contacting ATC from a personal aircraft, and they practiced listening to the ATIS/AWOS frequency. In this activity, the cadets discerned the importance of noting the winds and noting the altimeter settings, prior to taking off, in their simulated takeoff procedures utilizing basic radios. The senior members in this activity acted as a simulated ATC and a simulated ATIS, while the cadets simulated a personal aircraft radio call requesting takeoff from Daytona Beach International Airport.
In addition to conducting leadership and PT classes, the cadets--C/Airman Noah Xavier Gutierrez, C/Senior Airman Rolando Carlos Perez, C/Airman George Tiagi, and C/Jacobo Cardona--collaborated in their demonstration of chapter 10 of the FAA Pilot's Handbook of Knowledge. The team discussed the differences between center of gravity, "moment" in an aircraft, and the effects of weight on a lever, to further understand aviation W&B (weight and balance). Each cadet produced a lever in this activity and explained how an aircraft can change its CG depending on the total moment and total weight, and the detrimental effects of loading too much weight aft of the CG in an aircraft.
